Bridges to Literacy workshop/Parent/Child program evaluations
from a district in Pennsylvania, March 2008:

"I found the entire program very enlightening. Having an older child who struggles with reading, I plan to make some of the games a family activity. Thank you for sharing these ideas."

"This program has motivated me to sit with my child and actively be a part of his education."

"The word game was a great idea--I will definitely do this with my son. I like that the books actually have a lesson and a meaning to them. Thank you."

"I really enjoyed learning about the program and I feel motivated to work with my child. I would not change anything. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us."

"I liked learning the different ways to make reading FUN for my daughter--the games, etc. I can't wait to start." "It was great to get books that are geared to her level. THANKS."

"GREAT PROGRAM!! Making games is a great way to learn. I loved the subjects of all of the books."

" I really enjoyed the hands-on activities. It showed how to excite my child with the activities. Thank you!" "I will use the books in order to open the lines of communication between things he may come across in his everyday life and things that take place at school."

"I like the instructions for parents as to what do you want to convey to your kids so we (parents) don't have to struggle."

"I think it was interesting to play the games and realize what can actually help my child learn. I enjoyed the meeting very much."

In another Pennsylvania district, parents and children reflected on their experiences with
the Bridges to Literacy program.

Students were asked what they liked best. They replied:

"The books and puzzlers were our favorites, especially making words and the word missing page." (cloze activity).

Parents gave this feedback and discussed their plans and ideas:

"All of the paperback books have good lengths and good story lines."

"My child was on level with the books and he had a feeling of success."

"My child is more confident as a reader."

"The book boxes help to keep their books organized." (The district supplied book boxes for each family.)

"These are 'just right books' for our children."

"We plan to bring the books on car rides so we can discuss the books."

"The Bridges to Literacy series brings literacy into our home. Each family member is part of the team."

A parent mentioned that she saw her child take pride in the Bridges books because they belonged to him. He was happy he didn't have to share these books, since all the other books in the house are for all the kids to share. He keeps them tucked away in his book box under his bed.
